What's up!? I hope all is well. I wanna start today with a shout out to "Senor ORO", one of my readers that's hot on Gold. I don't talk about it a lot, but Gold is a great way to play defense in a bearish market(like now) and there are a bunch of ways to play it. "Senor ORO" commented that he was invested in Gold Coins. That is one of many good ways to be long Gold. I have dedicated one of my picks today to "senor ORO" and Gold.
My Gold play is Yamana Gold/AUY. They are about as pure of a Gold play as you can find without owning a bag of gold coins(nothing wrong with that either ORO). They mine Gold and own properties in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Honduras and The US. Relative timing, safety and value are all excellent. AUY has climbed 42% over the past 52 weeks and is up 9.5% over the past week. As I said a good play in a bearish market. Their sales are up 62% over last quarter too. The hardest number to ignore is their net income increase over last year which was 324%. That was followed closely by it's annual sales growth of 222%. Did I say defense? Well, I guess the best defense is a good offense. Next up is Corrections Corp of America/CXW. as you may have guessed by the name, they own and operate prisons(not a spell checker url). CXW operates 65 facilities in 19 states including rehabilitation and transportation facilities. They don't have the greatest relative value, timing or safety, but that doesn't scare me. Some stocks(depending on what the company does) can have low numbers in those categories. They have a forecasted earnings growth rate of 18% and an annual sales growth of 26%. Not too shabby. Although CXW is down 15% over the past 52 week, I haven't owned it and it's up 3% over both the last week and month, plus their "sales"(income) is up 11% over the year. I don't know if it's a good thing for America or not, but CXW has some growth in it's future. Last up is Phase Forward/PFWD. They provide "enterprise" level software for clinical trial and drug safety monitoring activities. They have customers in The US, UK, France and The Asia Pacific. PFWD has a vast product base covering all aspects of data management. They also provide consulting services that include the design and documentation of the processes related to it's customers. Their customers include pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies; regulatory agencies; academic institutions and clinical research organizations. PFWD has pretty decent relative value and timing but the relative safety isn't so great. They have an annual sales growth of 26% and a net income increase of 136% over last year(NICE!). I like PFWD cause they been steadily rising 8% over the past 52 weeks. I know it's not huge, but they are up 7% over the past week too.
Seems there weren't many places in The Stock Market to make money today. at least not in the places I've become accustom to. The 3 I gave you today should be a good start. I've heard some "experts" say we've hit a top in the hot sectors. That may be true. If that's the case, for you traders out there, watch for sector rotation already occurring. as for the long-term, we will always have demand for basic needs and they will grow. If you're not already all in(which you shouldn't be), the next week or two might be a good time to pick up some of these sectors at a discount. We all know them, Ag, Energy and Materials.
In order to keep my Forex Account open, I had to close out my short position on the EUR/USD. I also bought some EUR/USD and turned a profit almost right away. I feel bad, but I don't have enough invested in Forex to ride out the dollars woes. I still have a bullish long-term view, but as for now, I need money and it's in being long the EUR/USD. I have also made a small purchase of AUD/USD in my real account and saw a small gain today. My practice account still has a bullish USD feel($50,000 fake or not makes a good cushion). I still have high hopes for the dollar.
Today we got a bit of a wake up call. This is a good time to evaluate our portfolios and maybe play some defense like our friend "Senor ORO". I'll do what I can too, cause we're all in this together. Thanks for reading.
